The Clint Deimeke Outdoor Foundation sponsored its second youth fishing derby on Saturday, June 12, at Becker’s Lake, located off of Hwy. BB near Community R-6. Last year’s derby was cancelled due to COVID-19.
The foundation was established in memory of Clint Deimeke to help the young people experience nature and wildlife.
“Clint had the best personality and laugh,” said his sister Nicki Poindexter. “He was loyal to his family and friends. He loved being outdoors, especially to go hunting and fishing. He had a real passion for doing both.”
There were 65 young fishermen and fisherwomen, up from 40 last time, with the youngest group getting a little help from their family members.
“Such an amazing day for the second annual fishing derby!” said Poindexter. “Thank you to all who came out and to all of our wonderful volunteers for helping out.”
Kids brought their own poles, bait and tackle for the catch-and-release tournament, but registration, refreshments, hotdogs and a small gift were courtesy of the foundation. There were also awards and prizes handed out in various categories.
Etta Sachs caught the first fish of the day. Jack Loethen caught the biggest fish at 13 inches. The smallest fish on the day was caught by Cali Fortmann (5.75 inches). And Ember Nichols caught the most fish as well as the last fish of the day.
“She’s a fish whisperer,” said Ember’s sister, Miranda. “Everytime she fishes–fish after fish after fish.”
The other winners were:
Five and under: Walker Matthews (11.75 inches), Braxton Kuda, 10.75 inches and Renley Schafer, 10 inches.
Ages 6-9: Jack Loethen (13 inches), Hannah Swaim (12.25 inches) and Dalton Crum (11.25 inches.) Two other contestants tied for third but Crum won the tiebreaker by catching the most fish of the three.
Ages 10-13: Caden Thomas (12 inches), Kyler Swaim (11.75 inches) and Ethan Baig (11.25 inches).
Volunteers for the event included members of Clint’s family, friends, Audrain R-VI FFA and the community. Donors for the event included Wal-Mart in Mexico and Sam and Sandy Gastler.
