Senior, Andrew Myers

Andrew Myers is the son of Karen and Dave Sanders and the late John Myers.

On Saturday, March 2, 2024, Iron Eagle Welding Academy held its annual welding competition. Twenty-two schools and 77 individuals competed in this invite only competition. Andrew Myers, Van-Far senior, who attends Davis H. Heart Vo-Tech in Mexico, Mo., took second place.

Deila Ray, Instructor at Davis H. Hart Vo-Tech, explained that the Iron Eagle Welding Academy Competition is an invite-only competition for seniors. The top three students from our program were invited to the competition. Andrew earned second place and was awarded a $9k scholarship to IEWA where he will be attending this fall. Andrew has been in the Welding Technology program here at the Davis H. Hart Career Center since his junior year, Ray added. Andrew has gone through our training with SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, and Oxy-Fuel Torch Cutting. Andrew is also a member of SkillsUSA. This year Andrew competed in the district competition for the Fabrication Team. Andrew, along with two other Van-Far students we have at HCC, Carter Jennings and Jackson Green, earned second place and are advancing to the SkillsUSA State competition held April 5, 2024 at State Technical College of Missouri in Linn, Mo.

Seeing all of the hours Andrew has put in to better himself and prepare for a career in welding has been a privilege to see, said Ray and a career in welding can be a life-changing path and I can already see how Andrew’s future is going to benefit from what he has learned here. Andrew said right now there is a lot of potential in welding to make money. Adding he likes all the challenges each weld brings.
