On December 7, a traffic stop was conducted in the area of 1500 W. Highway 54 for an equipment violation.
The driver provided a false name to officers on scene and was released with a warning at that time.
Through follow up investigation, it was learned that the driver was actually identified as Russell Wiles, age 45, of Vandalia who had walked away from the Audrain County Jail while on medical furlough and was currently a fugitive.
Vandalia Police officers, along with Audrain County deputies, responded to the 700 block of W. Woodlawn, where it was learned that Wiles would be located.
Wiles was located and taken into custody without incident and transported to the Vandalia Police Department for processing.
Wiles was then taken to the Audrain County Jail on charges of Attempted/Identity Theft for providing a false name to law enforcement. Wiles also has a $15,000 cash or surety bond for previous charges through Audrain County.
The Vandalia Police Department wants to thank the Audrain County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in this case.
All subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
