WIC Check Fraud

Posted on Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at 1:49 pm

The Audrain County Health Department has seen an increase in the misuse of WIC checks,  and the resale of  food and formula that has been purchased with WIC benefits on websites such as Facebook.
WIC assistance is intended for those families most in need of nutritional support.  Fraud and abuse take resources away from those who need them the most.
Some examples of fraud and abuse include:
Buying or selling WIC checks, food or formula or allowing someone else to do so.
Posting WIC checks, foods or formula for sale in newspapers or on the internet (through     websites such as Craigslist and Facebook).
Giving away WIC checks, food or formula.
Altering WIC checks in any way.
Misusing WIC benefits may result in paying the state agency, in cash, the value of the food benefits and may subject the client to civil or criminal prosecution under State and Federal Law.
The Missouri WIC program takes all complaints seriously and encourages the immediate reporting of any alleged WIC program abuses, violations or fraud.
If you suspect a WIC participant has committed fraud, please report it to your local WIC provider – Audrain County Health Department (573) 581-1332.
Standards for participation in the WIC program are the same for everyone regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or handicap.
