Two Women’s Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center (WERDCC) officers received Lifesaver Awards last Wednesday for two different heroic efforts in 2016.
WERDCC Warden Angela Mesmer told those in attendance first of the efforts involving Corrections Officer I Patsy Whitley on May 20, 2016.
On that day, while working in the Visiting Room, an offender stood from her seat and appeared to be choking. COI Woodhurst along with COI Whitley and COII Church, responded to assist the offender, who was bent over and could not breathe. COI Whitley administered two back blows with the palm of her hand and was able to dislodge the piece of food that was restricting her airway.
Warden Mesmer also read the brief narrative regarding COI Archer.
On August 23, 2016, while working in Dining Room A, COI Archer observed an offender that appeared to be choking on her food.
The offender had discoloration to her face and was having trouble breathing.
COI Archer administered three to five back blows with the palm of her hand and was able to dislodge the food that was restricting her airway.
The WERDCC Honor Guard posted and retrieved the colors for the event. The WERDCC Personnel Club offered the refreshments.
