Four WERDCC corrections officers received a Lifesaver Award during a ceremony held on Friday, November 13.
WERDCC Warden Angela Messmer gave each officer the award along with a State Resolution drafted by State Senator Jeannie Riddle.
The officers received their honors for their heroic efforts on April 17, 2015.
At approximately 10:58 p.m., COI Patricia Rick found an offender unresponsive, who was assigned to full suicide watch.
The offender was found with her head covered by a Kevlar blanket.
COII Nathan Hess, COI Robert Crowley, COI John Dexheimer, and COI Rick entered the cell and COII Hess removed the blanket and observed a plastic bag over the offender’s head.
He immediately called a Code 16 and removed the plastic bag and observed for signs of life. None were found.
He began shaking the offender and asking if she was okay but didn’t receive a response.
COI Rick began chest compressions. On the third compression, the offender took a breath and began breathing on her own.
