Water taste issue addressed

Posted on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at 12:53 pm

N1110P60013CMany Vandalia residents might have noticed an unpleasant taste with their tap water during the past two weeks.
Chief Water Plant Operator Darren Berry said he’s taken several calls and his department is working on the issue.
Berry believes the combination of heavy rains and heat have created a large number of algae blooms.
To combat the issue, the department has turned the carbon up in the supply. The carbon will help take out the taste and odor as it is fed at the water plant.
“It seems like in the summer time we get these complaints,” Berry added. “It’s a nuisance to people but there is nothing that is of any health effect.”
The current issue, Berry added, is something the city has faced in past summers.
He said the lagoon is “real bad” due to the large amounts of rain.
He noted the good news was the lake is full.
Berry said, upon request, the city could flush hydrants. A call must be made to City Hall at 594-6186 for a work order to be issued.
He added that he hopes to see things getting better later this week or sometime during next week.
