Many Vandalia residents were surprised to see the north wall and roof collapse at Attorney Terry Witte’s office on Main St. early Tuesday morning.
Fortunately, no one was hurt as the incident took place overnight.
Witte said he received a call from Vandalia Police around 2:15 a.m. notifying him of the collapse.
He said work at the site began to remove items soon after receiving the call and went through the night.
Many volunteers joined in on the efforts including Paul and Cindy Evans, Connie Bartison, Cindy Wright, and Roger Woodward.
“No client’s files have been damaged in any way,” Witte said.
Two trains went by the office early Tuesday morning but there was apparently no further damage to the office.
Witte said he had repair on the wall back in 2011 and recently contacted a contractor in March after noticing some issues with the same wall due to it deteriorating.
Two contractors just looked at the location last week. Work has begun to clean up the location and Witte said he’s looking for a temporary location.
Once the clean-up efforts are done, contractor assessment can be made to help Witte in making decision on what his next step might be.
Meanwhile, Witte said those wishing to reach his office can call 594-6161, 594-6878, or his cell phone if no one answers the previous two numbers at 573-291-9574.
