“The Vandalia Leader” won three awards this past weekend in the 2018 Missouri Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest.
Ben Marshall was recognized for his work with online videos as he won both second and third place awards in a category featuring all Class 1 and Class 2 weekly newspapers in the state.
Marshall took second with his video on “Oktoberfest” and third for his video on the Van-Far boys track and field team during their state championship run in Jefferson City.
“Ben puts a lot of hard work into the videos he posts online and these awards are a result,” said Publisher Ron Schott. “I encourage everyone to watch his long list of videos on our website and those posted on our YouTube channel. He has documented countless events over the past couple of years with his hard work. We are extremely proud of his efforts.”
Schott was the other award recipient as his article on the “Spiced Apple Cafe” earned him a third place finish in the Best Business Story category for Class 2 size newspapers.
Judges said it was a “well-written story about a new restaurant with strong community ties.” Judges also preferred a better treatment of the story, which may have given Schott a first or second place finish.
