Vandalia Historical Society celebrates anniversary

Posted on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at 10:23 am

Instead of our usual Christmas Party, the Historical Society voted to have a party in January to celebrate our 7th anniversary as an organization.

This event was held at the Vandalia Hotel on Friday, January 18 with a potluck supper. The array of appetizing food surely put a strain on some New Year’s resolutions.

Before the meal, President Paul Ray gave a brief overview of our projects during the past seven years.

He reminded us of our first meeting in  January 2005 and the discussion regarding the goals of our group.

Some of the ideas put forward included helping to develop community pride, establishing a museum, and preserving historic structures.

Our first project, thanks to a suggestion from Gary Sosniecki, editor of The Vandalia Leader, was a two-volume history book. Bolstered by our success with this endeavor, we established our museum. Other major projects were the Roots of American Music Exhibit and the Dinner Theater program celebrating the establishing of Audrain County.

We are currently engaged in the Cornerstone Project, involving remodeling and enlarging the museum.

Ray thanked everyone who supported and helped with all of these undertakings. He then invited everyone to enjoy the party.

After the meal, a couple of games were played.

The party came to an end at about 9 p.m. after setting the next date for 6:30 p.m., February 15 at the hotel.

Our meetings are open to the public and everyone is encouraged to attend.
