A 6-year-old boy, who was reportedly playing hide and seek at the Vandalia Fairgrounds, is in serious condition at University Hospital after being struck by the driver of a truck who did not see him.
Michael J. Klug, 41, was backing out in a 2008 Ford F-150 in a southbound direction when the crash occurred. The Patrol report states that the incident “occurred as [the boy] was hiding under vehicle one. Vehicle one backed out and struck pedestrian.”
The incident happened at 5:46 p.m. on May 4. The boy was life flighted by air evac to University Hospital in Columbia.
The incident was investigated by State Highway Patrolman A.M. Gordon and assisted by Trooper D. J. Dalton.
