The Van-Far R-I School Board approved a new IP based phone system to provide potential savings to the district during their monthly meeting held last Thursday.
After receiving pricing from three companies, a bid from Rayfield was selected.
Rayfield had nearly a $5,000 cheaper set-up fee than Jive and the service costs around $4,000 less in the first year than a bid provided by Windstream.
Van-Far Superintendent Dr. Stephen Hunter and Tony Lower presented the pricing information.
With the switch, it was noted that the district may not be able to maintain its current numbers but is hoping it can.
Rayfield was selected after a 6-0 vote with the lone absent board member being President Kevin Motley. Vice-President Dana Keller led the meeting in his absence.
Superintendent Dr. Hunter reported to the board regarding the Summer maintenance.
He noted that rooms are being waxed in both buildings and the gym floor will be waxed this week.
He also talked about contacting three companies regarding cold-mix patching the parking lots and paint striping.
Advanced Trenching and Construction bid $4,250 for materials and labor to cold-mix patch both the elementary and high school lots. A $2,620 bid was also received from a Columbia company to stripe the high school lot.
A new re-striping plan will result in an increase in the number of parking spots.
Superintendent Dr. Hunter also scheduled a walk-thru with school board members at 6 p.m. prior to the September board meeting.
It was also noted that a tax rate hearing will be held at 6:45 p.m. on August 17, prior to the regular board meeting.

The district will be audited on August 8.
