The Van-Far girls 7th and 8th grade girls basketball teams beat Winfield in back-to-back wins Monday, November 19.

The 7th grade squad was first to play leading 4-0 by the end of the first quarter. The Lady Indians closed the half with an 8-0 edge over Winfield.

“The Lady Indians came out playing tough defense, but had a hard time scoring in the first quarter,” Van-Far head coach Allison Allgood said. “The next quarter both teams still were struggling with their offense.”

Winfield put six points up in the third quarter but Van-Far lead 19-6 by the end of the quarter with the Lady Indians adding another eight points before finishing the game with a 27-8 victory. Gina Clausen had 14 points with six rebounds and Reaghan Case had 13 points with three rebounds.

“I’m very proud of this 7th grade team,” Allgood said. “They are improving with each game and are really starting to work together on defense.

“As long as we keep improving we will continue to be successful throughout the year,” she said.

Allgood said the 8th grade squad came out playing strong on defense but struggled offensively at first, too. The Lady Indians led 8-2 at the end of the first quarter with a 14-6 halftime lead.

“In the first we were given a lot of shots, but just couldn’t finish,” Allgood said. “In the second our defense picked up a little, but our offense still didn’t kick in much.”

She said the Lady Indians’ offense picked up and scored 15 points in the third quarter for a 29-8 lead. Van-Far closed the fourth quarter with a 37-13 victory.

Naija Jackson had 10 points with four rebounds, Jayda Borgmeyer had nine points with three rebounds, and Abbi Kuda had nine points with five rebounds.

“I’m proud of this 8th grade group for finishing this game well,” Allgood said.

“We have been struggling with letting up after the first half, but during this game we really used our defense to finish the game on a strong note. We have a tough schedule coming up and we need to keep improving and finishing our plays to be successful the rest of the season.”
