The Van-Far 7th and 8th grade boys basketball teams swept South Callaway last week before the players enjoyed turkey last week on Thanksgiving.
Van-Far’s 7th grade Indians crushed the Bulldogs in their match-up as they picked up a 40-12 victory.
“We did a really nice job pressuring the basketball and getting easy baskets in the open floor,” said Van-Far head coach Joe Basinger. “Offensively, when we had to execute offense, we did. I thought Preston (Burnett) and Dayton (Sanders) executed the pick and roll very nicely. Latrell (Wright) played really well, he was able to really frustrate their guards and get himself in the open floor to make plays.”
Wright finished with a team-high 19 points while Sanders added 11 points. Cayden Caldwell scored five points, both Jaydan Harvey and Burnett had two points, and Trenton Lower added one point.
The 8th grade team’s defensive play and some strong shooting performances carried them to a 61-34 victory over South Callaway to complete the sweep.
“These guys bounced back and played extremely well,” Basinger said. “Defensively, in the first half, was as good as we had played all year, I thought. The nice thing about the offensive end was we didn’t run very many sets tonight. South Callaway ran a lot of different defenses and the kids just went four out and one in and made plays all night. That was nice to see. Colin (Wilburn) has been playing really well for us this year, he stays extremely active in the paint and on the glass. Trevor (Lower) shot the lights out of it tonight. I know he’s a good shooter and it was really nice to see him get rolling; he hit three in the third quarter and that really put the game out of reach for them. Overall, I thought we all played really well.”
Wilburn scored a team-high 24 points. Trevor Lower added 15 points; both Sam Middleton and Verdell Johnson had seven points; Rylee Hanson scored six points; and Matthew Dunn had two points.
