The back-to-back first place, district champion Van-Far golf team is made up this year of mostly returning golfers who have played throughout high school.
The only player lost from last year was Brayden Christian.
“We will miss his competitive spirit, quick wit, and his constant determination, and loyalty to his team and teammates.” said Van-Far head golf coach Melissa Orr.
This year’s team is made up of senior Jason Orr, a two year state qualifier; senior Ethan Winders; juniors Rylee Hanson and Zane Allen; sophomore Ashton Garnett; and freshman Haley Baskett.
Winders, Hanson, and Allen all bring post season experience into the season this year.
Last year, Van-Far golf was the third place team at the Palmyra Invitational with Rylee Hanson being a medalist.
Van-Far was the second place team at the EMO Conference Tournament with Jayson Orr, and Rylee Hanson, being first team all-conference.
The Indians golf team placed second at the Sectional Tournament.
At the state tournament, Van-Far was the fifth place team.
Orr, reflecting over last year’s season, says, “The team has set a goal to return to state as a team and bring home hardware. The experience gained by the four returning state golfers has already been reflected in the early season preparations and practices. There is a determination to go back, and this time, leave it all on the course and not let nerves effect their play. The team is working on consistency in their individual golf games and keeping a positive mind-set even when a shot or a hole doesn’t turn out like they had hoped. Much time has been spent on lowering the number of three putts we have this season and putting ourselves into situations where we can gain strokes on our opponents by making smart golf decisions.”
