Van-Far head girls basketball coach Kelly Orf was looking for her team to put another “W” in the win column last week when the Lady Indians took on local rival Wellsville.
In spite of being up by just one point with 11 seconds left in the game, Van-Far held on for a big home victory, 34-33.
“We were only up by one with :11 seconds left but the girls played amazing defense and we held on for a victory,” Orf said.
The Lady Indians held a slim 4-1 first quarter lead before pushing ahead by 13 points at halftime.
By the end of the third quarter, the Lady Indians were up 14 before holding on late for the one point win.
“Our girls looked really good for three quarters,” Orf said.
“We got up by 13 by the half and kept a 14 point lead in the third, but for some reason in the fourth we couldn’t score. We missed a lot of free throws, which almost cost us the game. We have been struggling with playing ahead. We get up and we try to push the ball and make poor choices.”
Abilene Gatson led the Lady Indians with 10 points, three rebounds, two steals, and two assists while Reaghan Case added eight points, three rebounds, one steal, and one assist.
Jayda Borgmeyer had five points, four rebounds, two steals, and two assists; Kayelee Harrower added four points, four rebounds, one steal, one assist, and one block; Renee Nelson tallied three points, six rebounds, and one assist; Breanna Strange had two points, seven rebounds, two steals, two assists, and one block; Hailey Hopke had two points and two rebounds; Alexis DeTienne had one rebound and one steal; and Annaliese Hubert had two rebounds and one assist.
