Entering their final regular season game of the season without a victory, Van-Far’s seniors made sure they went out with a victory after defeating Madison 7-6 in extra innings.
Ethan Gooch picked up the win on the mound in relief after tossing the final two innings and allowing no runs. Lucas Robinson started the game, tossing six innings while allowing four earned runs.
“Was nice to win,” said Van-Far head coach Wes Rowden. “We have not played that bad overall this year. We just don’t have that dominate pitcher like many of the teams we play do have. But the win was good.”
Trailing 1-0 early, Van-Far took the lead in the second inning with two runs. Ryan Nelson had an RBI double while Robinson knocked him in with an RBI single.
The Indians scored two more runs in the fourth inning. Nelson hit a one-out double to score Logan Boyd. Nelson later scored on Robinson’s RBI single.
Brian Kurz and Boyd both scored runs in the sixth inning on Kyle Decker’s two-RBI single.
Van-Far pushed ahead the winning run in the top of the eighth inning as Boyd scored on a pick off attempt at second base. The errant throw went into centerfield, allowing him to score from second.
“Logan scored the winning run basically on speed alone as he scored from second on a pick off that went into center,” Rowden said.
Offensively, Van-Far’s No. 3-5 hitters scored all seven runs and combined for six of the team’s nine hits.
Van-Far’s defense made three errors in the win but also turned two double plays while nearly converting a third.
In the first round of the Class 2, District 7 tournament in Clopton, the Indians season came to an end just before press time with a 16-1 loss.
