The Van-Far Cross-Country team arrived at the Class 2, District 3 meet with a mix of excitement and determination. The crisp autumn air set the perfect mood for a day of intense competition. Among the team, all eyes were on Garrett Hopke, the standout runner this year who had already made a name for himself by advancing to state competition the previous year.
As the race began, Garrett quickly found his rhythm. His strides were strong and steady, evidence of the countless hours of training he had put in. The course was challenging, with its mix of hills and flat stretches, but Garrett navigated it with the skill and confidence of a seasoned runner. The support from his teammates fueled his determination. With every mile, Garrett pushed harder, his focus firm. As he approached the final stretch, he could see the finish line and the clock ticking away. Summoning every ounce of energy, he sprinted towards the end, crossing the finish line with a time that secured his place at state once again.
Meanwhile, Slade was also making his mark, finishing his first Cross Country season. Although he didn’t achieve his ultimate goal, Slade ended his season on a high note by setting a personal record. He finished 33rd out of 155 runners, just missing the cut for state qualification, which required a top 30 finish. His performance was proof of his hard work and potential for future seasons with the team.
Coach Cross, reflecting on the season, said, “Our motto this year was small but mighty. These kids are such great runners to work with. Garrett will run state next weekend. Slade just missed by three people but had a 2-second PR—not bad for his first year. Khloe had an obstacle-filled year, but when she is healthy—watch out other teams. Erin has been a great leader for the last three years, and her dedication to running is unreal, but sadly that is not always rewarded as you would wish. Thanks for a great season, all four of you!”
The Van-Far team erupted in cheers, celebrating Garrett’s incredible achievement and Slade’s impressive finish. Garrett’s second consecutive advancement to the State meet was a proud moment for the entire team and the school.
Now, Garrett sets his sights on the state meet, which was scheduled for last Saturday, Nov. 9, at Gans Creek in Columbia. With the experience of last year’s state meet under his belt, Garrett is more prepared than ever to take on the best runners in the state. The entire Van-Far community is behind him, eagerly anticipating another stellar performance.
