Several Vandalia area residents packed into the Van-Far Elementary gymnasium last Thursday evening for the 2nd-4th grade Christmas Concert.
The evening began with “The Little Snowflake” (2nd grade), “Our Good Dr. Hunter Looked Out” (3rd grade), and “Snow Day” (4th grade).
“Flakes!,” a musical celebration of snow, slush, and snirt followed with 2nd-4th grade students.
Five scenes followed the opening performance. They included “Scene 1-Cold Snap,” “Scene 2-We’re Flakes!,” “Scene 3-Snirt!,” “Scene 4-Nothing Special,” and “Scene 5-One in a Million.”
The “little snowflake” in Scene 4 was Richard Hayden.
The evening concluded with the reprise “We’re Flakes!”

Van-Far Jr./Sr. High Choir, Band hold concert
Students in both the Van-Far Jr./Sr. High School Choir and Band entertained a large crowd during its annual Christmas Concert held on Tuesday, December 9 inside the high school gym.
The Junior High Choir, who were accompanied by pianist and teacher Kay Bunge and directed by Alex Cucciarre, opened with “Ave Verum Corpus.”
They also sang “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “Christmas Time Is Here.”
A combined choir performance followed with “O Come, All Ye Faithful.”
The High School Choir opened with “Carol of the Bells.”
The women’s song “Gloria” included descant featurettes from Janie Swarthout, Jayda Borgmeyer, and Emily Laskowski.
Men’s Choir students then sang “Boogie Woogie Holiday.”
The High School Choir’s final song was “Here Comes Santa Claus.”
Noted All-EMO Conference Choir event attendees includes Borgmeyer, Anna DeTienne, Emily Laskowski, Baileigh Lucas, Micaella Love, Janie Swarthout, Makayla Vigil, Brayden Christian, Joseph Clithero, Brendan Flowers, Jacob Garner, Parker Wallace, Sharrod Connor, Alex Flowers, Lathyn McMorris, and Andrew Snodgrass.
Cucciarree directed the Junior High Band with the opening song of “White Christmas.”
They also played “A Sleigh Ride Fantasy” that featured a trumpet solo from Ethan Winders. The Jr. High Band also played “Santa’s Rockin’ Holiday Mix.”
A combined band performance featured the song “We Five Kings.”
The High School Band then entertained the crowd with “How the Grinch Stole Christmas Medley,” which featured a trumpet solo by Patrick O’Connor.
A rendition of “O Holy Night” featured Madison Orr (flute), Regina Clausen (flute), Sarah Motley (clarinet), Janie Swarthout (alto saxophone), and Cody Swarthout (trumpet).
The “Highlights from Frozen” featured all of the Junior High All-District Band members as well as the High School Band.
The program recognized Northeast Missouri All-District Junior High Band members Lauren Shaw, Shaylinn Summers, Ethan Winders, Jayson Orr, Tyler Robinson, and Devin Fleming.
The only Northeast Missouri All-District Honorable Mention Band member was Emily Laskowski.
The Community R-VI School District presented its Secondary Christmas Concert last Thursday night in the new gym.
The Middle School and High School Concert Band, under the direction of Rose Wilburn, opened with “Santa Baby, highlights from “Frozen,” and “Christmas At The Movies.”
The 6th Grade Intermediate Band followed with “Christmas Medley” and “Christmas Bits and Pieces.”
Community R-VI’s Guitar 1 Class performed “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” “Scarborough Fair,” and “God Rest ye Merry, Gentleman.”
Eva Eikel then directed the Middle School Choir in singing “Bidi Bom” and “Christmas Chopsticks.”
For two songs, the Middle School and High School Choir performed “Amid the Falling Snow” and “Blackbird.”
Community R-VI seniors Lakin Davenport, Kelsey Hilderman, Courtney Hoyt, and Olivia Mosley sang solos when the High School Choir sang “Where Are You Christmas?”
The final song was “Oh Santa.”
