The Van-Far Alumni and Friends Association met Thursday, October 23 to evaluate the September annual meeting of the Association. The 2014 dinner meeting with former graduate Charlene Wheeler Williams as the evening’s speaker and entertainment was well received. Several out-of-town guests expressed their desire to continue the annual dinner meeting of the Alumni Association the weekend of Prairie Days.
However, in order to attend functions that the Vandalia Area Chamber of Commerce have planned for the Saturday evening of Prairie Days, the Alumni and Friends Association will move their evening meeting time to Sunday noon after area church worship services. Plans were made for next years meeting to include tours of the high school building, as well as a catered dinner and speaker, to be held on Sunday, September 27, 2015.
Brenda Owens and Muriel Beshears volunteered to contact past graduating classes about the Sunday, September 27, 2015 date and the availability of having their reunion in conjunction with the all-school reunion time. Muriel Beshears, President of the Alumni and Friends Association, will contact area caterers for noon dinner bids. Van-Far Alumni and Friends Association will also have involvement in high school homecoming activities.
Jeanne George, treasurer, reported the scholarship fund had received memorial contributions in the names of June Nolan and Jerry Zimmer. The Van-Far Alumni and Friends Association was formed after the 50th anniversary of the Van-Far High School building in 2009. The purpose of the organization is to support the school, and the graduates of Vandalia, Farber, Lincoln, and Van-Far Schools, and to award annual scholarships to its graduates and alumni. In its short six-year history, nearly $50,000 has been awarded in scholarships to over 40 Van-Far graduates.
