The Van-Far Alumni and Friends held their Alumni Dinner this past Sunday after a one year hiatus.
The event opened with Muriel Beshears recognizing graduates from a variety of decades.
There were $11,500 in Alumni scholarships awarded in 2018. Those included Colton Jensen (Cindy Pirch, four year renewable, $5,000); Alan Adam $1,000 Memorial winners Parker Wallace, Taryn Adam, and Paul Schambach; Shirley Forgy $500 memorial winners Mackenzie Kurz and Alex Connaway; Van-Far Alumni $500 winners Josh Hodde, Jacob Garner, and Madelein Dunn; Zandra Dowell $500 memorial winner; and Sarah Motley, current student scholarship ($500).
Loralee Adam introduced guest speaker Cindy Pirch, for whom the alumni friends had named their most prestigious scholarship award in her honor. Pirch said she was very honored and touched by being asked to speak at this year’s event.
The retired principal and her husband Garry now reside in Summersville, Mo. She reflected on her eight years spent with the district and publicly recognized the many folks she worked alongside through that time.
“Working with this great staff made it so much easier for me to expect more,” she said. “When you have good people around you, good things happen.”
Pirch said it only happens because of the kids.
She is currently a CASA volunteer in retirement as she continues to be active in many organizations and volunteer activities while still finding time to raise chickens on the farm.
Van-Far senior Jayson Orr performed his variety act for the event, sharing his singing and performing talents with those in attendance.
Officers elected for the alumni group include Muriel Beshears (president); Joyce Nolan (vice-president), Carol Schambach (secretary), Jeanne George (treasurer), Jim Deppe (scholarship), Gary Heim (endowment fund), and members Brenda Owens, Debbie Moore, Missy Gooch, Julie Gatson, and Averil Beshears.
Alan Winders and Lisa Lovell also talked to those in attendance in regards to the YMCA.
All proceeds from the dinner go to the Alumni Scholarship Fund, which has made possible numerous scholarships amounting to thousands of dollars to Van-Far graduates during the past 10 years.
