President Paul Ray opened the May 16 meeting of the Vandalia Area Historical Society in the Genealogy Library by asking for new discoveries and donations. Charlene Teague reported the following donations. Mick Hayden brought in, as a donation from Rachel Kohl, several official ballots for an Annual School Election of April 7, 1953. Jeff Wright donated a gun holster owned by Ogle Heim when he was Vandalia City Marshall. Donna DeTienne donated a Vandalia Banking Association book belonging to Hoy South and an unsigned General Warranty Deed from Hoy South to Charles B. and Ida McCurdy dated October 20, 1928. Bob and Vivian Pabst donated the sign from Bob’s Barber Shop. Marie Haught donated an excellent picture of the G.M. & O. Railroad Depot in Farber, a picture of a man and small boy, presumably a father and son, from Carver Studio; a flyer advertising stud service by a “Fine Roadster Stallion”, Gray’s Bashaw, for a fee of $7.; a picture of Ida McMillian from Alice Hesser; business cards advertising Henderson’s “Red School House Shoes”, Goodrich Brown Boots from Kraus Shoe Company, and Bruce Cedaline Closets from Sparks-White Lumber Company in Vandalia. These cards are not dated but they are valuable tools for researching the business history of early Vandalia.
Nancy Nation reported on the work of the Genealogy Committee and asked anyone who might be interested in cutting out newspaper articles to call her. They are compiling folders of area deaths, weddings, births, and Yesteryear columns.
After regular reports were read and accepted, Pat Trower told the group about the positive feedback she has received after posting pictures of some of the items in the museum on Facebook. As a result of one comment that the students at Van-Far be required to visit the museum and write an essay about one area of history found there, it was agreed that the school be contacted regarding this.
Charlene reported that she had given a program regarding the Museum and Genealogy Library at the Lutheran Church Mother-Daughter Brunch and that a group from the Audrain County Area Genealogical Society was coming on Saturday afternoon and would tour the museum after their meeting. Any group interest in doing this should call Charlene Teague at 594-3026 or Pat Trower at 594-3999.
Some suggestions for our participation in the fair were briefly discussed and further information on this will be forthcoming.
Paul asked the group to be thinking about a possible fundraiser to be discussed at the next meeting.
After setting the next meeting date for Friday, June 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Genealogy Library, the meeting adjourned at 8:15 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend our meetings.
