President Paul Ray opened the July 16 meeting of the Vandalia Area Historical Society by asking for new discoveries and donations.
Charlene Teague reported the following. The Leon Schwab family donated a Harbison-Walker brick dated 9-27-1980, a Harbison Walker belt buckle, and several items related to Charlotte Schwab’s long career as a teacher in the local high school. Some of the items have not yet been sorted and logged in. Virginia Howdeshell donated a Vandalia High School 1981-82 FFA jacket belonging to her Rita. Carolyn McBride donated several items related to her Vandalia High School days. Also, included in this donation is a very interesting book, “Lack Threads-An African-American Quilting Sourcebook.” Terry Witte donated a scythe, which fits right in with our agriculture display. Bill Doak brought in a 1957 Vandalia Community Fair Program. Travis Case donated a plaque listing the sponsors of new counter stools for the Vandalia Drug Store in 2005 and a stool sponsored by Paul Clithero and Aubrey Bland. All of these items are much appreciated. Many items are donated when people are cleaning out their own homes of items collected over time or when they are disposing of the contents of their deceased parents’ home. We encourage this practice since many of these items add much to the Museum’s history of our area and its residents.
After regular reports were read and accepted, the discussion turned to our participation in Prairie Days with details to be finalized at our August meeting.
Pat Trower is asking for pictures of “My Favorite Fishing Picture” for a new display. All pictures will be copied and returned. She needs the name, year, and location. The only requirement is that they have lived in the Vandalia/Farber area at one time. The deadline is September 1 and pictures can be left at the museum or Pat can be reached at 594-3999.
Vicki Wright reported that Crystal McCurdy called and changed the location of a program for the Library Summer Reading Program for children to the Library instead of the Museum because of rain. Vicki showed a movie about the history of Vandalia which everyone enjoyed.
After setting the next meeting date for 9 a.m., Saturday, August 2 at the Genealogy Library, the meeting adjourned at 10:30 a.m.
Everyone is welcome at our meetings.
