At a new time, the Vandalia Area Historical Society met at the Genealogy Library at 9 a.m. on March 21 with coffee and donuts. President Paul Ray welcomed the group and asked for new discoveries and donations. Charlene Teague reported that Mick and Janie Hayden had donated a lovely dress belonging to the late Genii Clark Kindred, a picture of her in a similar dress, believed to have been taken between 1905 and 1908, and a box from H.C. Moore, “The Friendly Jeweler,” of Vandalia, containing a lady’s delicate 8” folding fan. They also donated an account of a presentation of “Fashions and Stories from the Vandalia Area 1870’s-1930’s” by the Vandalia Area Historical Society in March of 2007. Joe Hassien donated numerous items belonging to the late Wilmer Butts, including 8”x 10” photos of the first three Vandalia City Police Cars. Dennis Foree donated a history of the Waters family, going back to the late 1600’s. We encourage everyone with ties to this area to bring us their family histories as a committee is working diligently to compile this information. All of these donations are greatly appreciated.
Regular reports were read, with a very favorable report on our Card Party Fundraiser in January, assuring that another one will be held next January. A discussion regarding a reopening date and hours followed with Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays Noon to 4 p.m. with a date for reopening in early April to be decided.
Paul reported that work in the Carter building is to be resumed, to be finished this summer.
The new book with local lore and stories being planned was discussed with ideas on how these stories might be collected being put forward. Planning for this project will continue and will be shared as available.
Pat Trower reported that she is in contact with a very interesting speaker for our June meeting and expects to have this finalized in a few days.
The group decided to continue meeting at the Genealogy Library at 9 a.m. on the third Friday. Everyone is encouraged to attend our meetings. The next meeting date was set for April 18, after which the meeting adjourned at 10:30 a.m.
