In the absence of Vandalia Area Historical Society President Vicki Wright, Vice-President Paul Ray opened the July 15 meeting of the VAHS by asking for donations and new discoveries.
Charlene Teague reported the following: Alan Roy donated a 1942 calendar advertising W.G. Fowler, an agent for Sinclair-H.C. Gasoline, a business card for Daniel-Blackburn of Vandalia, Missouri advertising Henderson’s “School Shoes,” and a bottle opener advertising H.E. Wilson Bottling Works in Vandalia.
Van-Far Elementary donated their yearbooks from 1996-97 through 2016-17. These are especially appreciated as we had none of them.
Charlene McCune donated two snapshots of the South Elementary School and one of the teachers at that school in the year 1952-53.
Teresa Wenzel donated a copy of Stone’s Tri-County 1892 Directory covering Lewis, Adams, and Marion Counties. All of these donations are appreciated.
After regular reports were read and accepted, the discussion turned to plans for Charlene’s Birthday/Card Party to be held Saturday, August 19.
The birthday “Meet and Greet” will be held from 4-6 p.m. and is open to the public. Supper will be served at 6 p.m. With card playing beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets for supper and cards are $25 each and may be purchased at the Museum between 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturdays or Sundays between noon-3 p.m.
The deadline for buying tickets is July 31. They are also available by calling Charlene at 594-3026 or Vicki at 594-3657.
After setting the date for the next meeting, the meeting adjourned at 10 a.m.
