Van-Far speech and debate students Harley Young and Kiera Hayden made school history by medaling at the 2021 MSHSAA State Speech and Debate tournament on Friday, April 23. They are the first two students in Van-Far history to become state medalists by advancing to the final round of the tournament.

Trevor Winders and Cameron Jones also qualified for State, after also qualifying last year, making a record four students qualifying for State in a single year.

Young placed seventh in Storytelling and Hayden placed seventh in Prose Reading. Both seniors have qualified for state every year since beginning high school, and their years of dedication and perseverance have paid off, stated Speech and Debate Coach Tyler Oesch.

This year has been Van-Far’s most successful competitive speaking season in its history with more than 100 individual medals across the team, added Oesch, as well as a third Conference Championship, a second District Championship, and four state qualifiers in seven events, culminating in two State finalists

Other members of the 2020-2021 Speech Team, all of whom shared in the season’s success, were: Katelyn Sutton, Kenna Engh-Hoffman, Caitlin Allen, Cay Galloway, Jayden Kurz, Karisa Hayden, Layla Ogden, Vivian McFadden, Cameron Jones, Michael Allen and Georgia Coomer.

“Congratulations to the entire Van-Far Speech team for their dedication this year and being such a positive and hard-working group that reflects the best of the Van-Far School District,” added Oesch
