Community R-VI’s Clay Thebeau goes in for a
layup against Salisbury.

The Community R-VI Trojans basketball team was hoping to leave the Sturgeon Tournament last week with a trophy. Unfortunately, bad weather forced the cancelation of its third place game after the team split games with New Bloomfield and Salisbury.
In the semifinals against state-ranked Salisbury, the Trojans were unable to overcome a 13-4 first-quarter deficit as they had no answer for Brady Francis.
Community R-VI trailed 24-16 at halftime and lost 53-36 as Francis finished with a game-high 25 points.
“(It was) closer than the score indicates as we had to foul at the end,” said Community R-VI head coach Kenneth Jett. “We had a lot of trouble with there size. Every time we would get back into the game Francis would take over; we had no answer for him. The boys played hard as always…”
Clay Thebeau led the Trojans with 12 points while Conner Brooks scored 10 points. Kyle Curtis led the post play with 12 rebounds.
The Community R-VI Trojans won their first round game after holding on late to defeat New Bloomfield, 47-33.
Community R-VI led 22-12 at halftime before outscoring New Bloomfield 25-21 in the second half.
The Trojans made 7-of-11 free throws in the win.
Clay Thebeau scored a team-high 20 points while Brooks added 13 points.
“We did a good job defensively, which helps we struggled a little on the offensive end,” Jett said.
