The Community R-VI Trojans picked up their first EMO Conference victory of the season last week when a quick start led the boys basketball team to a 50-48 victory.
Community R-VI jumped out to a 16-3 first quarter lead before Wright City rallied in the second quarter to cut the lead to seven at halftime.
Wright City went on to win the third quarter to close within five points.
In the fourth quarter, Eric Hombs made four free throws down the stretch to seal a two-point victory.
The Wildcats did outscore the Trojans in the final three quarters but still lost the game.
“I really thought our press was the key to the game,” said Community R-VI head coach Matt Thomas. “We got on them early and turned them over a lot in that first quarter and it led to easy buckets for us.”
Cadin Escamilla led the Trojans in their fourth win of the season with 18 points, five assists, and two rebounds.
Eric Hombs scored 14 points, five rebounds, and one assist; Cordell Hollensteiner added eight points, four rebounds, and one assist; Adam Hombs tallied four points, two rebounds, and one assist; Danny Kuda had four points, four rebounds, and two assists; and Matt Gastler had two points, six rebounds, and two assists.
Falling to Elsberry
The Trojans took on Elsberry and trailed 26-20 at halftime before falling late, 49-47.
Community R-VI outscored the Indians 21-19 in the second half but were unable to pull out a victory.
Elsberry made a late free throw to go up by two points before the Trojans missed two shots in the final seconds of the loss.
Hollensteiner led the Trojans with a team-high 21 points, three rebounds, three assists, and one steal.
Matt Gastler added 13 points, nine rebounds, four blocks, one steal, and one assist; Eric Hombs had nine points, eight rebounds, two steals, and one assist; Cadin Escamilla added four points, four rebounds, two steals, and one assist; Danny Kuda had one assist; Klayton Bosworth added three steals, two rebounds, and one assist; and Adam Hombs had one assist and one steal.
Tough loss to
Madison
The Trojans lost their seventh game of the season when they took on Madison and fell short, 49-36.
Community R-VI led Madison through three quarters 29-28 before falling apart in the fourth quarter when the Panthers won the final frame, 21-7.
The Trojans failed to score in the final four minutes of the game.
“We have to find guys who want to get defensive stops late in games,” Thomas noted.
Cadin Escamilla led the Trojans with 15 points, five assists, four rebounds, and two steals; Hollensteiner had nine points and four rebounds; Eric Hombs chipped in six points, three rebounds, three assists, and one steal; Matt Gastler had two points, six rebounds, and one assist; Danny Kuda scored two points and one rebound; and Adam Hombs had two points and two rebounds.
