The Community R-VI Trojans basketball team held Jamestown’s offense to seven points or less in all four quarters of their game last Saturday in the 4th Annual Gary Filbert Classic in Mexico last Saturday. The Trojans jumped out to a 15-5 first quarter lead before increasing their edge to 25 points by halftime.
Community R-VI outscored Jamestown 20-11 in the second half to hold on for the 34-point win.
The victory moved the Trojans’ record to 7-1 on the season.
“(It was a) good game on defense,” said Community R-VI head boys basketball coach Kenneth Jett.
“(We held them) to single digits in every quarter, gave up one point in the second quarter, and gave up 10 points in the first three quarters. (I was) very proud of our defense. The boys played hard.”
Lane Thebeau paced the Trojans with 19 points. Clay Thebeau tallied seven points and four assists while Kyle Curtis had a near double-double of seven points and 10 rebounds.
Conner Brooks added six points and four steals; Matt Gastler had six points and five rebounds; Anthony Fairchild scored three points; and Bobby Jett had two points,
Proceeds from the event benefits the Gary Filbert Memorial Scholarship at Mexico High School and the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association’s Gary Filbert Scholarship.
The other teams in the event included the boys and girls teams from both Paris and Mexico, Silex girls, Cairo boys, California girls, and St. Dominic boys basketball teams.
