The time of Trojan Crowning is always special to the Community R-VI student body. With a large crowd set to enjoy those festivities, the Trojans boys basketball team was hoping they could feed off the energy to pull off a big win over a talented North Callaway squad. Fortunately, that was exactly what happened. In spite of being down seven points at halftime, the Trojans responded during the final two quarters. They outscored the Thunderbirds 38-25 and held on for a 58-52 victory.
“This was a great team win,” said Community R-VI head coach Matt Thomas.
“We put three different guys in double figures, which makes us much harder to guard. I thought defensively we did a really good job on their drives and not allowing them to get paint.”
The Trojans made five 3-pointers in the second half of the win.
Blaze Escamilla led the way with 23 points; Cordell Hollensteiner added 14; Eric Hombs added 10 points; and Bobby Jett had seven points. Nine of Hombs’ points came in the second half while Escamila scored 16 in the final two quarters.
The Trojans didn’t have the same kind of momentum earlier in the week in a road loss to Bowling Green, 66-48.
Down 10 at halftime, the Trojans managed to cut the lead to eight in the third quarter but struggled on the boards in the loss.
Jett scored a team-high 18 points; Hollensteiner added 13 points; Hombs scored five points; Evan Hartsock had three points; and Eric Hombs had one point.
