The Community R-VI Trojans split a pair of hotly contested games last week. Their big win came against Prairie Home, 64-58. The Trojans trailed 20-17 at the end of the first quarter before rallying to tie the game at halftime.
Community R-VI responded after halftime by outscoring Prairie Home 32-26 in the second half for the win.
“We started out really well,” said Community R-VI head coach Matt Thomas. “Shot the ball well but then we got comfortable defensively. We didn’t defend great the first quarter, but got better. We were able to get them in foul trouble, which helped.”
Bobby Jett led the Trojans with 31 points; Cordell Hollensteiner added 12 points; Blaze Escamilla had 10 points; both Danny Kuda and Eric Hombs scored four points; Evan Hartsock had two points; and Jaryn Kuda had one point.
The Trojans followed up the win by playing an early Saturday morning game in the Norm Stewart Classic against Harrisburg at Columbia College.
Community R-VI had a tough match-up against a team that was in the Final Four last year but they more than held their own.
The Trojans led 25-23 at halftime before Harrisburg’s big 30-point third quarter was too much for the Trojans to overcome in a 75-65 loss.
“Proud of our guys,” Thomas said.
Turnovers and Harrisburg’s offensive rebounds helped Harrisburg pull away in the win.
Jett scored 25 points, two rebounds, two assists, and one steal; Hollensteiner tallied 25 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals; Hombs had six points, three reboiunds, and two assists; Danny Kuda tallied four points, five rebounds, one assist, and one steal; Escamilla had three points, five rebounds, and three assists; Hartsock had two points and five rebounds; and Kyle Oligschlaeger added one rebound and one assist.
