The Van-Far boys and girls cross country program combined to have three Top-15 finishes in the Wellsville-Middletown R-I Invitational held last Monday.
On a very hot day competing against runners on a flat course, the boys were led by Sam Hazel, who placed third out of 45 runners with a time of 19:26. Hazel made his move in the last 400 meters to earn a third place finish.
Mel Troy was eighth with a time of 20:35, followed by Cayden Caldwell in 21st (22:42). Ennis Childs ran hard near the back of the pack (27:36) as the Indians did not have enough runners to score team points due to sickness.
“I thought the kids ran great; some of them improving their times even on one of the hottest days we have raced,” said Van-Far head coach Kris Cross.
The Lady Indians were led by Maddie McAfee, who placed 10th overall with a time of 26:02.
Vanessa Martinez was 16th in the field of 28 runners after finishing her race in 29:12.
“Maddie and Vanessa ran wonderful races, passing competitors all through the race to both being in the Top-20 finishers,” Cross noted.
