“This ain’t no game. Tennis is love. Tennis is life. This is our swamp. Remember, tennis not drugs.”
What started out as just a few Van-Far students playing tennis on the courts next to the Vandalia Area Aquatics Center has turned into an organized student-led activity complete with a Facebook page, brackets, refreshments, tournament rules, and tournament trophies.
Last Thursday, 16 stu-dents participated in an eight-team tournament bracket.
The top three teams included the tournament championship team of Brayden Christian and Joseph Clithero. The doubles tandem of Lathyn McMorris and Parker Wallace were second while Nathan Beatty and Brayden McMillen were third. A video of the official trophy presentation is available on the Facebook page called “V-F Tennis Squad.”
Though the City of Vandalia in a recent board meeting had a preliminary discussion on the future of the tennis courts, the increase usage of the courts by the Van-Far students is likely being noticed. The students are playing on the court during multiple days of the week.
The “V-F Tennis Squad” is also accepting donations to help the city in possibly purchasing new nets for the courts.
These students are also looking to attend a Van-Far School Board meeting to let board members know about their love for the sport and so the board could consider the possibility of adding a tennis program at the district.
Spectators are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs for their next tournament. A date will be announced on their Facebook page.
