Vandalia native Justin Swank continued to make a name for himself within the Hardee’s business through Tristar Ventures d.b.a after winning the Best Biscuit Bakers contests as a general manager for a second straight year.
Swank is the general manager of a Hardee’s in Rushville, Ill. The location is one of 31 owned by Tristar Ventures d.b.a in Illinois, Missouri, and Iowa.
His prize involved Swank having all of his biscuit equipment replaced at his store, from biscuit ovens, to his biscuit cooler, as well as his small wares.
The competition held March 26-27 featured the winners of each district as four general managers and four bakers went to the Hardee’s headquarters in St. Louis.
While there they stayed at the historic Union Station Hotel, ate at Carmine’s Steakhouse, toured the Arch, and traveled in a stretch Hummer.
A full batch of Hardee’s “Made From Scratch Biscuits” should take 15 minutes or less to roll out and produce approximately 52 biscuits. The competition tests procedural know how and the quality of the biscuits. After two judges watch the biscuit baker make the biscuits while being timed, the baker then chooses the tray of biscuits they want evaluated. The biscuits are then taken to another room where two more judges measure the height, weight, and diameter. They check for the proper color and overall appearance of the biscuits. After every thing is measured out, one person takes all of the scores and tallies up the winner.
The winning crew member was Jake Mitchell, a senior high school student from Macon, Mo.
