MEXICO, Mo.—Beginning June 1, SSM Health’s cancer screening services will see patients at its new location at SSM Health Medical Group – Internal Medicine at 600 Medical Park Drive in Mexico.
Tonya Linthacum, FNP, joins internal medicine providers, Dr. Peggy Barjenbruch, Dr. Michael Quinlan, Connie Dunn, DNP and Kim Cordes, FNP.
“We have a long-standing history of providing this unique service to the community, and we look forward to serving our patients at this new location,” said Diane Hagedorn, manager for SSM Health Medical Group – Internal Medicine.
The cancer screening program was established in 1985 to lower the rate of cancer in the community and educate patients on early detection and prevention strategies. The program follows the American Cancer Society annual screening guidelines as its standard of care.
At a typical appointment, women over the age of 21 and men over the age of 50 receive head-to-toe screenings for skin cancer and breast cancer as well as lymph nodes, abdominal, pelvic and rectal examinations. Women may also complete a pap smear, and staff will schedule mammograms, when applicable, to be performed at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital—Audrain. Genetic testing is also available for high risk individuals for breast and colon cancer.
It is estimated that half of new cancers can be detected early by screening. To date, more than 730 cancers have been discovered at early stages during the life of this program.
Appointments can be made by calling SSM Health Medical Group – Internal Medicine at 573-581-8500.
