SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital–Audrain now offers pulmonary rehabilitation services. Pulmonary rehab offers help for conditions causing shortness of breath such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, congestive heart failure, pulmonary fibrosis, and asthma.
“Chronic shortness of breath can cause fatigue, anxiety, and an overall decrease in quality of life for those who suffer from it,” said Jenea Smith, director of rehabilitation for SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital–Audrain.
“We are excited to offer this service to our patients to help them strengthen their muscles and improve their quality of life.”
Conservative treatment is available through a comprehensive rehabilitation program which includes general strength and endurance training, energy conservation, and relaxation techniques.
Patients will receive a complete evaluation to assess general strength and inspiratory muscle function and will be monitored regularly for their progression and success. Patients interested in this service will need to obtain an order from a medical provider.
In addition to pulmonary rehabilitation, SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital–Audrain offers cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, occupational therapy, and physical therapy specializing in aquatic therapy, lymphedema therapy, stroke rehab, vestibular rehab, oncology rehab, and female urinary incontinence treatment.
