On April 9 the Sheriff’s Office investigated the theft of about $5,000 worth of soybeans owned by Brain Shramek from a grain bin along Audrain Road 541.
A resident living nearby the grain bin saw the grain being loaded on a truck and approached one of the suspects who fled that area on foot.
The soybeans were released to the owner and the Sheriff’s Office confiscated the truck, a 1975 International.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Rural Crime Task Force and Agents from the Missouri Department of Conservation of both Marion and Montgomery Counties assisted the Sheriff’s Office with the investigation.
During the course of the investigation two men were arrested and charged with stealing; Joseph Gerhardt Schmits III age 42 of Taylor and Phillip Edward Toomey age 39 of New Florence.
Both Schmits and Toomey posted bonds of $10,000 each.
