Van-Far graduate and current international basketball player Mike Smith recently came back to the United States for the birth of his first child with his wife Katie.
Zander Michael Smith was born on November 24, weighing 7.8 lbs. and was 20.5 inches long.
The trip over to the states gave him a chance to reflect on how his first season is going as a starter for the Belgium team, Mons-Hainaut.
Smith is currently the second leading scorer on a team that started the EuroChallenge play in Group E with a 2-1 record. Unfortunately, the team is 4-5 overall for the sixth best record in the Scooore League Standings.
“It has been a slow start for us,” Smith said. “We have had some injuries and guys are just now getting back to 100%. Our starting point guard Talor Battle had a broken foot and is just now returning. He will be a big part of our futures success. Hopefully we can get a nice winning streak going pretty soon.”
Smith said he’s enjoyed playing with former VCU standout Jamie Skeen.
“Jamie is a great player,” Smith said. “He can bring a lot to the team offensively playing the power forward position. He can stretch the floor and shoot 3’s but he can also get a basket posting up. Overall, he is a great teammate to have on your side.”
The Belgium League season runs until the end of April with the playoffs starting in May.
The top two teams in each group advance to the next round which Smith said is the team’s goal right now.
Smith said his personal goals for this year is to build on the season he had last year and help his team make the Final Four in the EuroChallenge, win the Belgium Cup, and win the league championship.
