Audrain County Presiding Commissioner Steve Hobbs presents a proclamation to retiring Audrain County Clerk Shelley Harvey.

Audrain County Clerk Shelley Harvey enjoyed a retirement celebration thrown in her honor last Wednesday as she is retiring after 37 years of serving county residents.
Harvey began serving the county in 1981.
During the celebration, Audrain County Prosecuting Attorney Steve Hobbs talked about the things that took place in the world when Harvey started.
Presiding Commissioner Hobbs noted that “In 1981, the number one movie was “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”
Interest rates were at 15.75%, Ronald Reagan was the President of the United States. Muhammad Ali retired from the ring, and the first flight of the Space Shuttle happened.
“This all happened in 1981, and at that same time, Shelley Harvey, at the tender age of 17 years old went to work for Audrain County,” Hobbs noted. In which Shelley Harvey responded with, “We’ll go with that.”
After thanking everyone for coming, Presiding Commissioner Hobbs presented Shelley Harvey with a Proclamation from Senator Jeanie Riddle. He then presented her with a proclamation from the Secretary of State John R. Ashcroft.
Recognition of friends and coworkers through the years in attendance were then acknowledged.
Presiding Commissioner Hobbs then presented her with a letter from U.S. Senator Roy Blunt, who was Shelley’s first Secretary of State, congratulating her on her many years of service.
Retiring Shelley Harvey then spoke with heartfelt words, “It’s truly been an honor to have been able to do what I’ve done for so long,” she said. “I couldn’t have done it without all of the excel-cellent office staff I have had the pleasure to work with over the years. It’s not an easy job, and you have to depend on your staff. I have seen a lot of changes in the Courthouse. When I started, there were no computers, none. We had typewriters, and we still have a typewriter in my office that we use pretty much on a daily basis.” She said that last two hires were like, “what’s that?”
Retiring Shelley Harvey closed with, “I’m truly looking forward to retirement. I’ve made so many wonderful friends the last 37 and a half years. I thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to come wish me well.”
“Thank you so much. I appreciate it.”
