A large crowd gathered at the Second Christian Church in Vandalia this past Sunday for an annual celebration of the late Martin Luther King, Jr.
The guest speaker for this year’s event was the Rev. Karma Lee, from Harper Chapel Everybody’s Church in Montgomery City, Mo.
The event began with emcee Lillian Johnson.
An opening song of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” was performed by the congregation.
The Second Christian Male Choir sang a selection, followed by a scripture reading and prayer.
Sister Johnson then read a selection followed by a welcome from Brother Dolly Salmon.
The St. Luke Youth Choir sang three songs.
The response to the welcome was followed by the Second Baptist Youth Choir’s three performances, The choir is from Mexico, Mo.
An offering was taken, followed by Johnson singing a hymn while Charles Overton performed on the piano.
Overton then wowed those in attendance on the saxophone with a selection he wrote followed by a rendition of “America the Beautiful.”
Pastor Melvin McCaleb gave the introduction.
Youth from Lee’s church sang as well as his cousin before he shared a testimony and gave the main message.
Refreshments were served in the Fellowship Hall after the event.
