Rev. William A. Givens passed away at 8:25 p.m. on Sunday, October 7, 2012, at the Tri-County Care Center in Vandalia, Mo.
Visitation was scheduled for 5-7 p.m. on Friday, October 12, 2012, at Waters Funeral Chapel in Vandalia, Mo
Service was held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center in Vandalia.
Officiating is Rev. Richard Smith.
Music is provided by Delores Smith – soloist.
Interment is in the Pleasantview Cemetery in New London.
Pallbearers were Jamal Jackson, William Kerr, Darren Jackson, Alan Shaw, Glenn Bailey, and Richard Hammett.
Rev. William A. Givens was born on April 2, 1922, in New London, Mo., the son of Flowerree H. and Lula (Abbey) Givens.
He was married to Dorothy Alcena Parsons in Hannibal, Mo., on October 25, 1947.
Bill grew up and attended schools in the New London and Hannibal area. He was drafted into the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943 and served his country for three years serving in the Pacific Theatre.
After his service, Bill attended and graduated from Western Baptist Seminary in Kansas City in 1956. He pastored at several churches in the area and also at Lincoln University in Jefferson City. Bill retired in 2003 due to health reasons.
He was active in the Vandalia Ministerial Alliance, the Vandalia Rotary Club, Vandalia VFW Post 2173, Promise Keepers and the Lincoln School Restoration project in Vandalia. Bill enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling and table tennis.
Survivors include his wife, Alcena of Vandalia; one sister, Carolyn G. Parks of Denver, Colo.; also survived by a host of nieces and nephews.
He’s preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Euphamia Givens and Norman Givens; and four sisters, Lorene Givens, Charlene Davis, Matilda Jackson, and Helen Fisher.
Memorials are encouraged to the Lincoln School Restoration Project in Vandalia.
