SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital–Audrain recently began renovations for a 20-bed inpatient Behavioral Health Services Senior Care Unit, which will open this spring.
The unit, located on the third floor of the hospital, will provide patients access to staff who are specially trained to handle seniors in acute psychiatric crisis with specialty training in caring for individuals diagnosed with cognitive disorders.
Construction began early this year and is currently on schedule.
“We are doing extensive renovations to our third floor,” said David Schulte, facilities manager for SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital–Audrain.
“Everything is going smoothly and we expect to complete the project on time.”
Not only will the unit provide seniors 24-hour monitoring for crisis stabilization of psychiatric symptoms, it will bring additional employment opportunities for the community.
The hospital will hire more than 30 positions including a psychiatrist, recreational therapist, social workers, case managers and nursing staff.
The hospital will host an open house for the community prior to opening the unit.
