The Community R-VI boys basketball team split a pair of EMO Conference games last week.
Community R-VI needed a second half rally to defeat local rival Wellsville on February 12. Wellsville jumped out to an 11-4 first quarter lead as it fed off the energy from its home crowd. They led 17-16 at halftime before the Trojans outscored the Tigers 32-27 in the second half to win the game, 48-44.
“We came out slow, Wellsville came out with more energy,” said Community R-VI head coach Kenneth Jett.
“It took us a while to settle down. Wellsville played well but the boys kept their composure and battled their way back in. It’s always a test when you go on the road in the conference but if you want to contend you have to win these type of games.”
Conner Brooks scored a team-high 16 points while Lane Thebeau scored 13 points. Clay Thebeau had 10 points and Kyle Curtis was dominant on the boards with eight rebounds.
Kaleb Harris led the defensive effort with three drawn charges.
They opened the week by dropping their first EMO game of the season with a 68-58 loss at Elsberry.
The Trojans trailed 28-23 at halftime before being outscored 23-16 in the third quarter, which helped Elsberry hold on late for a 10-point victory. Lane Thebeau scored a team-high 22 points. Clay Thebeau had 14 points, and Brooks added 12 points.
