New Community R-VI head boys basketball coach Matt Thomas knew his Trojans would need be solid on both ends of the floor last Friday night if they were going to win a home opener against Sturgeon.
Unfortunately, the defense gave up 65 points to the Bulldogs in a 65-50 loss.
The Trojans were on fire early in the game behind the play of Cordell Hollensteiner, who scored 10 of the team’s 13 first quarter points for a 13-12 edge.
Sturgeon re-grouped just before halftime even though Hollensteiner added another five points.
The Bulldogs outscored the Trojans 17-6 before halftime to take a 10-point lead into the break.
Sturgeon’s Tyler Cockrell took over the game in the second half for the Bulldogs.
He scored nine points in the third and 11 points in the fourth to help Sturgeon outscore Community R-VI 36-31 in the second half.
Hollensteiner finished with a team-high 26 points and Cadin Escamilla scored all of his eight points in the second half. Eric Hombs added six points, Blaze Escamilla had five points, Matt Gastler scored three points, and Adam Hombs added two points.
