R-VI Trojans fall in Consolation finals to Bulldogs

The Community R-VI Trojans managed to pick up just one victory in last week’s Sturgeon Tournament, though it was a quality one over the host Bulldogs.
In the Consolation semifinals, the Trojans trailed 26-17 at halftime and the Bulldogs appeared to be headed for an easy victory.
Community R-VI responded with their offense picking up several baskets in the paint in the second half.
The Trojans outscored Sturgeon 37-26 in the final two quarters and completed their rally in the 54-52 victory.
Bobby Jett led the way with 15 points, two rebounds, and one assist while Cordell Hollensteiner added nine points, three assists, and two rebounds. Matt Gastler had nine points, six rebounds, and one steal; Gage Graves had nine points and one rebound; Anthony Fairchild added eight points, four rebounds, and one steal; Gatlin Curtis tallied four points, one rebound, and one assist; and Avery Carline had one rebound.
Defensively, Graves led the team with four deflections/tips.
Falling to Salisbury
In the first round, the Trojans took on the No. 1 seed and struggled in a 60-40 loss.
Community R-VI trailed 31-26 at halftime before being outscored 29-14 in the second half. The Trojans scored 18 points in the second quarter but had just eight points or less in the other three quarters.
The Trojans did make nine 3-pointers in the loss.
Jett scored a team-high 18 points and two rebounds while Hollensteiner added five points and two rebounds. Graves had five points and one block; Gastler had four points and six rebounds; Blaze Escamilla had three points; Fairchild tallied three points, two rebounds, and one assist; Curtis had two points and one assist; and Jamie Householder had one rebound.
Householder, Gastler, and Graves each had four deflections/tips on defense.
South Callaway loss
In the Consolation finals, the Trojans lost to South Callaway, 73-52.
The Trojans trailed 28-17 at halftime before being outscored 47-35 in the second half.
“They were deep and a little older than us and we had a period of breakdowns against their pressure,” said Community R-VI head coach Kenneth Jett.
The loss pushed the Trojans’ record to 3-14 overall.
Graves scored 18 points, Curtis had 11 points, Fairchild added eight, and Hollensteiner scored five points.
