Community R-VI head girls basketball coach Bob Curtis knew his team had a tough draw when entering the Class 2, District 5 tournament this past Monday against New Bloomfield. In a previous meeting, New Bloomfield broke a tie with a 9-2 run at the end of the game to beat the Lady Trojans.
In the rematch, New Bloomfield once again pulled away late as they made 12-of-23 free throw shots and forced timely Lady Trojans’ turnovers for a 50-46 victory.
“It seemed like it was there night tonight,” Bob Curtis said. “They hit their free throws when they needed to…We just struggled shooting the ball…”
The loss meant it was the final game for Community R-VI seniors Brittni Brandwein, Shelby Curtis, and Alisha Arens.
“The first thing that comes to mind (with the seniors) is commitment,” Bob Curtis said. “Those three girls do a nice job of being role models for the younger players.”
One of the big keys in the game for New Bloomfield came in the first quarter where they shot 50-percent from the field on 8-of-16 shooting.
The Lady Trojans led 2-0 before a 7-0 run. A late 6-0 run paced New Bloomfield to a 17-7 lead. Neither team could get much going offensively in the second quarter as both teams combined to make just 4-of-21 shots from the field. Brandwein scored five points in the second quarter and Emmalee McCoskey scored a late basket to close the gap to six points at halftime.
The Lady Trojans extended their run to 8-0 in the third quarter to tie the game at 21 behind Paige Curtis’ basket. After trading baskets two more times, New Bloomfield was able to keep a four point edge before the quarter ended.
“The first quarter, they really shot the ball well and got up 10,” Bob Curtis said. “I thought the girls did a nice job squaring the game back up coming out of halftime…”
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Trojans first cut the lead to three points with 4:18 left on Arens jumper in the lane that went off the backboard.
New Bloomfield began to pull away at the free throw line, extending their lead back to six points with two minutes left. McCoskey put in a rebound off a missed shot to cut the lead back to three points again with 16.5 seconds left.
A foul on the inbound play set New Bloomfield up to add a final free throw and the Lady Trojans were unable to complete a comeback.
Community R-VI made just 19-of-67 shots from the field in the loss while New Bloomfield made 16-of-40.
Brandwein scored a team-high 14 points with five rebounds, and one block while Paige Curtis tallied eight points, nine rebounds, two steals, and one assist. McCoskey had eight points, seven rebounds, and one steal; Arens had seven points, five rebounds, two steals, two blocks, and one assist; Shelby Curtis had four points, three assists, two rebounds, and two steals; Paige Harris had three points, two rebounds, and two assists; and Amelia Knipfel added two points, four rebounds, and one assist.
