The Community R-VI Middle School girls basketball team won the Madison Tournament championship this past weekend after picking up impressive wins over the host Lady Panthers and Marion County.
“We are really proud to bring home the first place plaque again,” said Community R-VI head coach Stacie Carroz.
In the championship game against Madison, the Lady Trojans jumped out to an 18-12 halftime lead.
They pushed their gap to 12 points in the third quarter before holding on for a 47-26 win.
“Offensively, in the second half, we found our groove,” Carroz said. “Every person contributed to scoring. We have gotten better defensively, holding Madison to 14 points in the second half.”
Alexis Welch and Sarah Angel each scored 11 points; Jenna Eikel had eight points; Ivy Hays added six points; both Kayla Jett and Brynna Beamer had four points; Lachlan Elsey scored two points; and Shelby Clark had one point.
The Lady Trojans trailed early to Marion County. In fact, they were down 17-16 at halftime before rallying in the second half for a 34-30 win.
“This was a close game the entire night,” Carroz noted. “We struggled putting the ball in the basket in the first quarter. This was a really good win against a really good basketball team.”
Welch and Angel each had 12 points; Clark scored five points; Eikel had three points; and Hays had two points.
