The Community R-VI Lady Trojans girls basketball team was hoping to continue its undefeated season with a run through last week’s Madison Invitational.
Unfortunately, the Lady Trojans won just one game before finishing fourth.
In the first round, the Lady Trojans knocked off rival Van-Far for the second time this season. This time Community R-VI didn’t need double overtime and cruised to a 46-30 victory behind Paige Curtis’ 14 points.
Both Paige Curtis and Shelby Curtis scored four points in the opening quarter to pace the Lady Trojans to an early 12-4 lead.
A 6-0 run in the second quarter helped the Lady Trojans overcome Kasey Gatson’s two 3-pointers and eight points for Van-Far to take a 21-13 halftime lead.
Amelia Knipfel’s 3-pointer midway through the third quarter helped the Lady Trojans put together an 8-0 run. Paige Harris had four points during the stretch.
Brandwein, who missed all four of her shots and scored no points in the first three quarters, sealed the victory in the fourth with six points.
Community R-VI’s defense forced 23 turnovers in the final three quarters and 31 in the game.
Paige Curtis led the Lady Trojans with 14 points; both Brittni Brandwein and Shelby Curtis had six points; both Harris and Knipfel finished with five points; Arens and Emmalee McCoskey had four points; Leah Mays scored two points
After the win over their rivals in the first round, the Lady Trojans ran into Salisbury and lost their first game of the year 47-31.
Salisbury jumped out to a 17-5 first quarter lead and led 31-12 at halftime.
Community R-VI rallied to cut the lead to 13 at the end of the third before falling by 16 points.
The Lady Trojans made just 3-of-17 shots from the field in the first half.
“We played well in the second half and won the last 16 minutes 19-16; however, we had too much deficit to overcome,” said Community R-VI head coach Bob Curtis.
Paige Curtis led the Lady Trojans with 12 points and six rebounds while Shelby Curtis had nine points. Brandwein finished with six points.
In the third place game against Paris, the Lady Trojans struggled offensively and lost the game in spite of defensively holding Paris to less than 30 points.
Community R-VI made just 9-of-24 free throws in the loss.
“Both teams did a great job defensively; however, neither team shot well from the field,” Bob Curtis said.
Brandwein led the Lady Trojans with seven points and Arens added six points.
