For the second tournament in a row, the Community R-VI girls basketball team advanced to the championship game.
Unfortunately, the Lady Trojans had the same result, this time losing the title to New Bloomfield, 58-45, in the finals of the always tough Sturgeon Tournament.
The Lady Trojans gave the state-ranked team in Class 2 everything they could handle before New Bloomfield pulled away in the fourth quarter on the free throw line.
“I am proud of the girls bringing second place home in a very tough tournament,” said Community R-VI head girls basketball coach Bob Curtis. “We played well (in the) week beating two good teams in Sturgeon and South Callaway.”
The Lady Trojans struggled from the field for most of the game but were never far from winning until late in the contest. Community R-VI missed their first seven shots in the first quarter but were paced by all-stater Samm Jett’s two baskets as they trailed 10-6. The Lady Trojans missed 2-of-19 shots from the field in the quarter.
In the second quarter, Alissa Curtis scored four points. Jett added eight points, including a buzzer beating 3-pointer from the Sturgeon Bulldogs’ mascot emblem in front of the main bleachers to cut the lead to 24-20 at halftime.
Jett completely took over the game in an entertaining third quarter.
Jett scored 16 points in the third after making two 3-pointers, converting one 3-point play, and nearly converting a second.
The New Franklin fans even gave her a hard time when Samantha Jackson was on the free throw line as Jett drew a New Bloomfield player to have a line violation on two missed free throws. Unfortunately, Jackson missed all four attempts.
Alissa Curtis added four points as both teams were tied at 40 entering the final eight minutes.
In the fourth quarter, Danie Jackson put the Lady Trojans up 43-40 with a big 3-pointer with 5:21 remaining. It was the last field goal for the game for the Lady Trojans as they made just 1-of-14 shots.
Jett attempted to post up her defender for most of the fourth and had trouble finding her way back to the perimeter. She finished the game with 29 points and ended the game just seven points shy of scoring her 1,000th career point.
The Lady Trojans had three costly turnovers and New Bloomfield took a 45-43 lead with 2:35 remaining. They made 14-of-16 free throws in the fourth to seal the 13-point win.
Jett scored 19 points with five rebounds, two steals, and one assist.
Alissa Curtis tallied 11 points, eight rebounds, two steals, and one block; Danielle Brooks added two points, eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals; Samantha Jackson had four rebounds; Rebecca Hagan had five rebounds, two assists, and one steal; Chelsea Hoyt added two rebounds; Tayler Cope had one rebound; and Danie Jackson had three points, one rebound, and one steal.
The Lady Trojans made just 13-of-60 shots from the field in the loss but did win the turnover battle, 20-15.
Beat South Callaway
Community R-VI’s man-to-man defense gave South Callaway headaches in the semifinals as they held the Lady Bulldogs to just 12 first half points.
Coach Bob Curtis said his defense was as good as it has been all year.
Community R-VI scored 15 points in the second quarter to pull away for good in a 54-35 victory.
“The key was our defensive effort,” Bob Curtis said. “We wanted it to be a track meet for 32 minutes and I think we were successful with that.”
Jett had 16 points, five steals, three assists, and two rebounds while Brooks added 10 points, six rebounds, six assists, and three steals. Alissa Curtis tallied 10 points, three rebounds, and one steal; Danie Jackson had six points, three rebounds, one steal, and one assist; Hoyt added five points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals; Hagan had two points, four rebounds, and two steals; Samantha Jackson scored two points, three steals, three assists, and one rebound; and Cope had one rebound and one assist.
