Prairie Days schedule updates include VAHS and YMCA

The Vandalia Area Historical Society and Eastern Family YMCA have announced some additional information to this year’s Prairie Days schedule set for Saturday, September 24.
They first noted that sign-ups will start at the museum at 10 a.m. for the noon Corn Husking Contest.
A Vintage Photo-Op will be in the Genealogy Research Library from 1-3 p.m. Period clothing will be provided and a professional photographer will take the photos.
Those participating will receive  two black and white 5”x7” photos for $5 while they wait.
VAHS will also host Dr. John C. Parrish house “During Construction” guided history tours are at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.  Sign-up is at the museum desk. A $5 donation is suggested with the proceeds going to the Vandalia area Historical Society.
Vicki’s Homemade Cookies will now be for sale in front of the museum. Also available will be popcorn balls and cowboy treats.
The Eastern Missouri Family YMCA will help kick-off Prairie Days with the annual 5K Run/Walk. Registration is from 7-7:50 a.m. and the race begins at 8 a.m. Entry fees are $20 per person and includes a Chamber Prairie Days T-shirt or $10 per person without a T-shirt. Registration and race starting location will be the Vandalia Library.
The YMCA will also be sponsoring the 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. and games start at 1 p.m. Entry fees are $30 per team and divisions will be grades 1-3, grades 4-5, grades 6-8, grades 9-12, and ages 18 and above. Teams are guaranteed to play two games. Registration and games will be on State Street.
In addition, the YMCA Informational Table will be available on Main Street for individuals to view the project floor plan and ask questions about the project. Plus, in the afternoon, YMCA committee members will be at the Kids Carnival handing out project flyers, balloons, and bracelets. Please stop by to learn more about the project. More on Prairie Days
The Australian country rock band will play on the main stage at 8 p.m. The group made their mark on the music industry in 2012 when they placed second in the nationally televised show “Australia’s Got Talent.”
They were nominated as finalists in three categories in the CMC Music Awards held in Brisbane, Australia in March 2016. They took home the CMC Group of the Year Award.
When in Vandalia, they will be playing some selections from their recently released album called “This Crazy Life,” which was released in late May. The Vandalia, Mo. concert is the group’s last in the U.S. before they go back to Australia to tour throughout the month of October.
At 6 p.m., “Madd Hoss Jackson” returns to Vandalia to entertain the crowd.
They last played in Vandalia in 2015 as part of the Vandalia Area Chamber of Commerce’s Summer Concert Series.
“Madd Hoss Jackson” plays a mix of country, rock, 80’s, 90’s, and a few of their own selections.
The group features Jim Jennings (Drums, Vocals), Matt Bullard (Guitar, Vocals), Andy Ham (Guitar, Fiddle, Vocals), and Mark Behymer (Bass, Keys, Vocals).
Other entertainment that day will be provided by the “Martin Family Circus.”
The musical group features two parents and four kids ranging in ages from 9-18 singing fun music filled with a blend of the family’s harmonies.
The four kids are led by their father Paul Martin, a Grammy-winning artist who was a lead singer of the country-pop group “Exile” and their mother Jamie Allen, who is the daughter of “The Oak Ridge Boys” member Duane Allen.
At 5 p.m. on the Main Stage, Kevin Horner “It’s Magic Baby” will perform. Horner is a three-time Peoples Choice Award winner for the art of ventriloquism.
The action-packed day begins at 8 a.m. with the Vandalia YMCA’s 5K/10K event, with 7:30 a.m. registration.
The Baby Show and Little Mr./Little Miss Contest follows at 9 a.m.
The Volleyball Tournament also starts at 9 a.m. with chairperson Amy Kuda.
Craft vendors open booths at 10 a.m. as Dr. and Mrs. Michael Cole are the chairpersons.
This year’s parade has a line-up for veterans at 10:15 a.m. on Joe St. Veterans interested in participating are to call Mike Culwell at 573-253-5205.
Other parade participants are to line-up at 10:30 a.m. at South School in time for the 11 a.m. event.
Culwell is also a chairperson for the Motorcycle Show starting at noon.
An Antique Tractor Showcase will also be held at that time.
At noon will be the start of the Vandalia Area Historical Society’s Corn Husking Contest. The small stage area will also feature street entertainment and the Van-Far Marching Band.
A Kids Carnival will go from 12:30-4:30 p.m.
The 3-on-3 basketball Tournament starts at 1 p.m. with a 12:30 p.m. registration.
Derek Kuda is the chairperson for the 2 p.m. Washer Tournament.
Kuda’s Auto Repair is in charge of the “Car Cruise” to be held at 5:30 p.m.
